Frank Bloom was born Francis Aloysius Bloom on August 21, 1919 in DeWitt, Clinton County, Iowa. Frank was the fifth child of Joseph Albert Bloom and Florence Mary Conwell (married in 1912). Two of his four older siblings, Mary Frances and Joseph, died a short time after their birth. Thomas Alphonsus, an older brother, served in the United State Navy in World War II and lived until 1981. Anna Alberta, an older sister, lived until 1983.
Frank was raised at the Joseph Bloom house located at 812 Fifth Street in DeWitt, Iowa. His family were devout Catholics who attended the nearby St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

No date is written on the following photo but Frank appears to be between ten and twelve years old.
The next photo was probably taken when Frank was seventeen years old.
